Navigating chapters is a snap, and you will want to bounce around the book for refreshers on difficult concepts. Abundant hyperlinks direct the reader to external Web sites. In reading Lodriguss' book, I revised my thinking on many concepts that I previously thought I understood.
While his explanations of subjects such as signal and noise and the advantages of particular hardware combinations are without flaw, Lodriguss really shines in his chapter discussing image processing. There is no reason that the most novice astroimager cannot bring the most out of his images after working through the clear tutorials.
The step by step examples of image processing made it simple to understand and then became a great reference for me when I'm doing my own images. Jerry's book supplies all the basics in a logical format to make that curve less steep.
It also has plenty of useful information for seasoned astrophotographers as well. This is an incredible book. Included in this impressive collection of information are seldom discussed topics There are many comparisons between different systems, all covered extensively, and a large part of the book concentrates on the processing of an image.Always Shoot RAW. Leslie Stroebel. Mike Inglis.
Phil also runs Night Sky Photography workshops with Michaels Camera Store, one of the largest retail camera stores in Australia, and all of the information in this book has been thoroughly road-tested by participants on these workshops. In addition to simple advice about the camera settings to use for each style of night sky photography, Shooting Stars provides detailed discussion of the finer points of imaging in low light conditions.
Photographing deep-sky objects during the full Moon is tricky. Capturing the Moon is quite easy, smaller planets are a bigger challenge.
